Complaint
Scraping, grinding noise from the engine when idling and engine speeds above approx. 1500 rpm, which is noticeable inside the vehicle.
The noise can be clearly noticed as coming from the transmission housing or the oil sump.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cause
At operating temperature, the reinforcing ribs of the timing chain guide rail start to act as a "washboard-like" track surface, and this may cause a scraping noise.
Caution:
The noise from the chain drive that is described above (under "Complaint") is not due to wear and therefore also does not lead to the chain breaking.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Measure
Caution:
This measure is ineffective for rattling noises in the warm-up phase or during the starting procedure that are caused by a timing chain extension.
Measure 10134828 "Additional repair options for the upper timing chain" must be used for this complaint.
Important:
In the event of repair measures, due to disturbing noises from the timing gear, the documentation described below must be retained:
This is a video file in which the Vehicle Identification Number and the noise problem can be traced, must be prepared and must be documented in the vehicle records.
In this case, the noise must be recorded, when viewed in the direction of travel clockwise (on the A-pillar), below the wing mirror on the bottom edge of the door and approx. 0.5 m from the vehicle when the doors and bonnet are closed, in the relevant engine speed range and when idle (at operating temperature).
As of ISTA D 3.46, two audio files were integrated into the test module and these are to be used to assess the timing chain noises.
Caution: Only the special tools from the
special tool kit, number 11 44 70, must be used for cleaning the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
IMPORTANT:
In order to prevent the entry of any dirt or grinding residues, all oil ducts must be identified and sealed off (see attachment).
The use of abrasive paper is not permissible.
FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS INSTRUCTION CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE.
Important: Before starting the repair work, it is essential to first ensure that the parts are available.
Caution: It is essential to check the part number of the delivered parts before installation and, if necessary, to compare the rails with the attachment on page 1. Only the parts listed in the measure must be fitted as part of the PuMA measure.
Please note:
Please note that the adjustment of the high-pressure pump (HPP) to the crankshaft has changed.
This change is documented for all car models in the Repair Instructions "1131052 Replace both timing chains (N47/N47S)" from the beginning of September 2014.
Until September 2014, proceed as follows:
In doing so, you must observe the attached document "Setting the high-pressure pump".
Picture 1:
Shows the crankshaft setting that is currently described in the Repair Instructions "1131052 Replace both timing chains.
(N47/N47S)"
The high-pressure pump is positioned according to the Repair Instructions.
Picture 2 and 3: Use the rotary handle to turn the crankshaft in the direction shown, until the piston has a downwards clearance of approx. 0 mm to 1 mm it, see picture 4.
Picture 4: Shows the downwards clearance in accordance with the top dead centre in relation to the engine direction of rotation.
Now fit the lower timing chain.
Caution: The setting of the timing of the crankshaft in relation to the camshaft remains unchanged.
Only the position of the high-pressure pump in relation to the crankshaft is affected by the change described.
Please note:
In detailed analyses, it has been found that the noise level at the crankshaft sprocket is significantly reduced through running-in effects.
For this reason, the crankshaft must NO longer be replaced.
A distinction is to be made between two cases, as follows:
Case 1:
For N47, N47DK0, N47S, N47T engines, manufactured between 01.03.2007 and 01.03.2011
In the event of a customer complaint, replace the following components:
- 13 52 8 575 471 Bottom timing chain.
- 13 52 7 797 906 Sprocket for the high pressure pump drive.
- 11 31 8 572 503 Top timing chain.
- 11 31 7 797 899 Guide rail for top timing chain.
- 13 52 8 573 158 Guide rail for bottom timing chain.
- 13 52 8 573 159 Tensioning rail for bottom timing chain.
- 11 31 8 576 201 chain tensioner for top timing chain
Note: The screwed connection on the idler gear for the balancing shafts must no longer be undone.
Note: Only use dampened tensioning rails and guide rails for the bottom timing chain. (See attachment, page 1.) Fitting just a single dampened rail is not permitted.
For the top timing chain, only use a sliding rail without strengthening bars. (See attachment, page 2.)
Note: On vehicles where the sliding rails without strengthening bars have already been fitted and both timing chains have been replaced as part of a repair: Deal with these vehicles as described under "Case 2".
Case 2:
For N47, N47S, N47T engines, from production period 01.03.2011 onwards, or where repairs have already been carried out using the sliding rails without strengthening bars.
In the event of a customer complaint, replace the following components:
- 13 52 8 575 471 Bottom timing chain.
- 13 52 7 797 906 Sprocket for the high pressure pump drive.
- 11 31 8 572 503 Top timing chain.
- 13 52 8 573 158 Guide rail for bottom timing chain.
- 13 52 8 573 159 Tensioning rail for bottom timing chain.
- 11 31 8 576 201 chain tensioner for top timing chain
Note: Only use dampened tensioning rails and guide rails for the bottom timing chain. (See attachment, page 1.) Fitting just a single dampened rail is not permitted.
Note: The reference construction status following the repair is shown on page 3 of the attachment.
Reimbursement:
Material and labour costs incurred can be claimed through the usual warranty channels subject to current warranty terms.
